Students are busy producing wonderful works of art as the Spring Art Show is only about eight weeks away. Fourth graders have made Buggy Sculptures, coupled with creative writing to accompany the display for the exhibition. You will be able to view still life pieces where the classes learned about and utilized basic watercolor techniques. Fifth and sixth graders completed self portraits in very different ways. Fifth graders made their own portraits on uniquely designed large dollar bills while sixth grade students created a realistic contour drawing and then converted it into an abstract portrait.
A contest was held in the fifth grade for the Arbor Foundation. The theme was 'Trees are "Terrific and Energy Wise." We reviewed how trees help us with energy conservation while Mrs. Stubbs taught more about tree species. Results of the contest were: Third place: Callie Vernon; Second place to Mark Fisher; and First place to Mikayla Kerns. Mikayla's piece will now advance to state competition. Student posters may be viewed at the intermediate school. As always, numerous pieces of student art work have been displayed at Burger King and at the Central Office. We are always looking for other places in the community to display student works.
Future projects will reinforce math concepts as we measure and work with geometry doing tessellations. Some of the areas we will cover in art not only meet the objective in the art curriculum, but also reinforces concepts taught across the curriculum.
The Art Department would like to express appreciation for all of the donations of recycled materials. These supplies make it possible to do so many wonderful projects!
