March 05, 2010
Just a reminder to all 6th grade students that the final draft of the biography is due Monday morning, March 8th, before 8:20 a.m. Below you'll find the directions for this project. We will begin to plan for the speech next week, but the written report is due on Monday!
Biography Directions
A biography is the story of someone’s life. Your task is to do research and compose a five-paragraph biography. You will also be required to deliver a three-minute speech about the person that you researched!
The Research:
Once you know your topic, begin to conduct research. You should be looking for important factual information that you want to include in your report. You must find information in three different locations. You may use encyclopedias, the Internet, reference books, or the Reader’s Guide to Periodic Literature. Take notes first, and then complete the outline that I will provide later.
The Report:
In the introduction paragraph, introduce the person that you researched by stating their full name, and explain what made them famous. Next, list the three topics on which you will report. Be sure to close your paragraph with a sentence that restates your subject.
For the content of your report, you should devote one body paragraph to each category. Make sure that you have a good topic sentence that introduces the category, include several sentences with details that support that topic, and a closing sentence to restate the topic.
Start your conclusion paragraph with a creative topic sentence to summarize the life of the person you researched. Next, restate the main points of your report, and then state what you found to be the most interesting, Close the paragraph with a creative sentence that summarizes your opinion of this person.
The Resources:
You must also include a list of the resources that you used. I will provide you with one resource book. In addition to this book, you must find information in at least two other locations. List your resources at the bottom of your report. Provide a heading (RESOURCES) followed by the titles of the resources from which you obtained information. Follow the directions for listing resources, which I will provide later. DO NOT list your resources in paragraph form!
