March Fifth Grade News

     MAP testing is on the minds of all teachers and students this time of year.  Reviewing of skills learned throughout the year has begun.  Tests will be in mid-April with students ready to perform their best.

     Social Studies classes are focusing on the Revolutionary War and the resulting activities that aided in creation our government. Students will be learning parts of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

     Science classes have been discussing static and current electricity and electrical circuits. Students investigated the properties of insulation and conductivity of various objects. Force and motion and simple machines have also been topics of study. Students conducted an investigation to measure how much force it takes to lift an object using a simple machine.

     Communication Arts classes are working on are author’s purpose and problem and solutions. Students are trying to work out solutions for some of their own problems.  Also students are going to be working on how to read a newspaper.

     Math studies have centered around standard and metric measurements.  Students memorized several measurement facts which will aid in learning how to convert measurements from one unit to another.  Several activities were completed using the ruler.  Students mastered measuring to the nearest eighth of an inch and the nearest centimeter.  Reviewing skills for MAP testing has also begun.

     With Daylight Savings Time on the horizon and temperatures warming, thoughts are turning to spring.  All are looking forward to sunshine and flowers.
